Board of Governors' votes to unify arts and social sciences faculties

On June 25 the University of Calgary Board of Governors voted to unify the faculties of communication and culture, fine arts, humanities and social sciences into a single faculty. A transition process will begin July 1 and the new faculty will launch April 1, 2010. >more.

Arts and Social Sciences Transition 

After soliciting input through an extensive campus-wide consultation process, on June 25 the Board of Governors voted to unify the Faculties of Communication and Culture, Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences into a single faculty.

A transition team has been established to implement the transition to a single faculty by April 1, 2010. The transition team will use this space to provide regular updates to the campus community on its progress. The goals of the transition team are to:

• Consult with appropriate academic units and address issues raised in the Student's Union recommendation on amalgamation.
• Name the new faculty by Fall of 2009.
• Develop a single set of regulations for admission into, transfer between, and graduation from undergraduate programs for consideration of the new Faculty council.
• Look at ways to create opportunities for interaction among colleagues with the goal of enhancing multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary work and, by 2010, provide a recommendation for the administration of the non-departmentalized programs in the Faculty of Communication and Culture.
• Recommend roles for associate deans and professional and support staff in order that they may assist the Faculty in achieving the academic objectives underlying this amalgamation.
• Regularly update the UPC, GFC, Board, Student's Union, GSA, and campus community on progress on these items.
