Trauma-informed teaching: Safeguarding student mental health and supporting post-trauma growth and learning
It is estimated that about two-third of students have experienced trauma in their lives, and around 9% meet the criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder. Trauma impacts ways students learn, and many factors affect how they move through recovery including vitally important supportive relationships that promote growth. Educators can be one of those vital supportive relationships and foster trauma-informed learning environments for student survivors; however, to accomplish this important work, knowledge about traumatic experience is essential. This workshop will provide an overview of what educators need to know about trauma to inform our work in supporting the learning and growth of student survivors of trauma, and a venue for discussing strategies for implementing practices that are relevant to the course.
