from the President

It is my pleasure to present the University of Calgary’s 2016 Sustainability Report, which outlines our progress towards the university’s leadership in sustainability.

Sustainability is a core value that we have made a priority in our institution’s plans and strategies, including our Eyes High strategic direction, Academic Plan and Strategic Research Plan. Earlier this year, we also launched a comprehensive and ambitious Institutional Sustainability Strategy that joins three frameworks for sustainability in our university’s education and research, community engagement, and administrative and operational excellence. The strategy will allow us to set the bar even higher as we strive to become international leaders in sustainable development, ensuring that sustainability is an integral part of the academic experience and everyday life on our campus.

As we work towards these objectives, ongoing reporting is essential for transparency, good governance and fiscal responsibility. Accordingly, this year’s report showcases our commitment to sustainability and our progress towards the goals of the Institutional Sustainability Strategy. Our achievements to date reflect the hard work and dedication of our students, faculty and staff — both on campus and in the wider community. These accomplishments also demonstrate the University of Calgary’s culture of collaboration as our entire university family comes together to lead excellence in sustainability. We are proud of what we have achieved together, but we also recognize that we have further to go.

The United Nations has laid out a clear vision for a sustainable future, proposing 17 Sustainable Development Goals to support healthy and resilient communities around the globe. These goals have galvanized more than 190 world leaders to do their part to end poverty, reduce inequality and protect the planet. As responsible global citizens, each of us has a role to play in this important journey to a sustainable and prosperous future — including the University of Calgary. We have the creativity, determination and ingenuity to spark meaningful change in the world around us.

Through our ongoing collaborations with partners in the community, government and industry, the university will increase our efforts to pursue sustainability in our research and education, finding innovative solutions to the social and ecological grand challenges we face today. This is the calling of a global intellectual hub and a top 5 Canadian research university, and it’s a mission that the University of Calgary eagerly embraces.

I hope you enjoy reading this report to celebrate some of our most recent achievements and I thank you for being part of the University of Calgary’s journey forward to creativity, discovery and innovation in sustainability.
