Undergraduate Students

The interview process for Winter 2016 has been completed, but applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis.  Please complete the application if you would like to be contacted for the next round of interviews; you will be contacted as positions become available.

The Student Success Centre has three undergraduate positions: Academic Advising, Facilitator and Student Service. All volunteer positions require a commitment of three to five hours per week. Please click on the links below for detailed descriptions of both positions:

The Facilitators will focus on presenting Student Success Seminars and will help monitor the SSC Study Space.  The Student Service peers represent the front line of the Student Success Centre, providing customer service and important information to students using SSC resources.

The Academic Advising Peer Helpers will conduct intake appointments and help connect students with advisors and resources.

In all roles, Peer Helpers will work with SSC staff on projects as needed, as well as have the opportunity to present seminars about academic strategies and study skills at SSC events such as My First Six Weeks in September and W2RAP Up in November and April.

The Student Success Centre strives to create a learning environment for the Academic Support Peer Helpers.  Peers will have the opportunity to perform all functions as the schedule allows; however, peers will primarily perform functions of their designated role.

Graduate Students

Graduate Support Peers participate in two programs that create a positive and academically-focused environment for graduate students from various disciplines. Peers will help facilitate Writing Boot Camps and will mentor other graduate students as part of the Graduate Coaching Program.  Please click on the link below for a detailed description of the position:

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with SSC staff to support graduate students with various aspects of their graduate career, such as goal setting, motivation and self-efficacy. Actively participate in on-going professional development activities offered through the SSC.
  • Run Graduate Writing Bootcamps, which includes introducing the program, tracking and goal setting, and supporting productivity during the session. Peers will be encouraged to participate in boot camp by writing alongside other participants.
  • Mentor less experienced graduate students by meeting approximately every two weeks. Mentors will assist students in setting achievable goals and introduce students to strategies and resources to help them achieve these goals.

Additional Benefits:

  • Learn strategies employed by effective academic writers.
  • Use project-management skills relevant to research and academic writing.

  • Completed a minimum of one year of graduate education.
  • Experience conducting a long-term research project is preferred.

Peer Commitment:

  • Minimum of 5 hours per month.
