More and more undergraduate students are choosing to "internationalize" their degree programs by spending from a few weeks to a full academic year studying abroad. Any student can apply to study at any university world-wide with a view to obtaining transfer credit, but participating in programs administered by the U of C may simplify the process and be less costly.
Exchange Programs allow students to study abroad for one or two semesters, and receive transfer credit towards their degree without paying foreign student fees.
The Faculty of Science participates in several exchange programs specifically for science students. The largest of these is TASSEP (Trans-Atlantic Science Student Exchange Program), an agreement between three consortia - Canadian, US and European - that gives U of C science students access to more than twenty institutions in many parts of Europe.

In addtion to these Science specific programs, the Center for International Student and Study Abroad administers university-wide exchange programs to over 75 different Universities in 25 countries around the world.
Students can also gain international study experience by participating in Group Study Programs (GSP). GSP are regular U of C courses, in many cases taught by U of C instructors, but offered abroad. Programs are offered every semester and range in length from 1 week (Block Week) to 2 full semesters abroad, however the majority are 4-6 weeks long and take place during the Spring and Summer Sessions. The courses offered and the locations vary from year to year. Participants pay regular U of C tuition and fees, plus a program fee that usually covers travel and accommodation, among other things. GSPs are coordinated by the Centre for International Students and Study Abroad. More information is available at www.ucalgary.ca/cissa
Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) are different from the three programs mentioned above in that students are paid (€615/month, about $880/month at the time of writing) for six weeks to three months between June and August. The program involves North American undergraduates working with German science and engineering PhD candidates on a variety of projects. The internship program was created by DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst; German Academic Exchange Service) and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Labor to "... give students the opportunity to live and work in international context, to gain confidence in practical and theoretical skills, and to improve language skills. Last but not least, the research internship should be a source of mutual cultural enrichment for trainees and their hosts. ... Good research relies on cooperation and international teamwork is becoming increasingly important. This means that scientists and engineers with international experience are increasingly sought after in both business and academia." - The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
A number of institutions, particularly in France, offer International Summer Schools which combine language proficiency courses with scientific courses taught in English. Two examples can be found at Lyon School of Chemistry and the Grenoble Institute of Technology.
