The Government of Alberta, through an independent entity called Alberta Innovates, offers several grant programs for research funding. These programs include:
Most of these programs require an agreement with the University prior to funding.
Several departments within the provincial government are also active in commissioning University research and require the University to sign an agreement as a condition of funding. These departments include:
Each of these departments has its own form of agreement to be used for research funding. These agreements may qualify as “Research Contracts” (i.e. contain licenses to the funder for intellectual property emerging from the research and contain restrictions on publication) or qualify as “Grants”.
Overhead rates for Alberta government agreements are set out in the Overhead and Indirect Costs of Research Policy. Most Alberta Government Research "Grants” are subject to 15% overhead, while Research "Contracts” are subject to overhead at the rate of 25% of costs.
