An examination of the claims and assumptions of a range of contemporary critical practices, such as formalism, structuralism, deconstruction, feminism and gender studies, new historicism, psychoanalytic criticism, and cultural and ideological critique. A study of poetic forms in English from a wide range of historical periods, social contexts, and national literatures. Through textual analysis and close reading, this course acquaints students with the characteristic techniques of prosody and basic poetic terminology, giving detailed attention to tropes and figures along with other poetic concepts such as form, tone, diction, implication, and point of view.
