Note: A Minor Field of Specialization is offered History and Philosophy of Science

Introduction

The Major in History and Philosophy of Science is offered jointly by the Department of History and the Department of Philosophy. Students wishing to enrol in this program should consult the Philosophy Advisor or the Program Director.

In their final year, students take Philosophy 517, Topics in the History and Philosophy of Science. This integrative seminar allows students to synthesize their training in History and Philosophy of Science and bring it to bear on a particular issue in the history and/or philosophy of science.  Students in the Honours BA also have the opportunity to write an Honours Thesis in either History or Philosophy.

Admission to the Major

Prospective students wishing to enter the BA (History and Philosophy of Science) Program must meet the criteria in the section of this Calendar on A.2 “Admission Requirements” at the University of Calgary.

Students seeking admission to the program should note that although neither Pure Mathematics 30 nor 30-level science subjects are required for admission into the Faculty of Arts, students are required to complete three full-course equivalents in a Science. Incoming students, therefore, should ensure that they have the appropriate high school 30/31 courses to support their intended science concentration.

Admission to Honours

The Faculty of Arts procedures for Admission to Honours established in section 3.4.3 Honours Degrees with a Major Field are applicable and provide the overall framework.

Interested students should consult with the History Advisor or the Philosophy Advisor. The application deadline is May 1.

Overlapping Programs

Programs in History and Philosophy of Science programs cannot be taken in conjunction with programs in Philosophy. This restriction applies to Major-plus-Minor combinations, Double Majors, Combined Degrees and Second Baccalaureate Degrees.

Programs in the History and Philosophy of Science can be taken in conjunction with programs in History with approval from the Faculty.  Consent is required for Major-plus-Minor combinations, Double Majors, Combined Degrees and Second Baccalaureate Degrees.

The Field of the History and Philosophy of Science consists of the following courses:

  • Most of the courses listed above have prerequisites, many of which lie outside the Field of the History and Philosophy of Science. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that prerequisites are completed.
  • History 541 is a decimalized course and may be repeated for credit.
  • Additional courses in the field may be listed on the Faculty of Arts website.
