Italian speaking-students or students with more than matriculation in Italian MUST consult the Department to be placed in a course corresponding to their ability. Native speakers are not eligible to take language courses by special assessment or to receive advanced credit for them.
Note on Prerequisites: All university level prerequisites for Italian courses must be met with a grade of "C-" or better.
Junior Courses
Italian 201 H(4-1)
Beginners' Italian I
This course, designed for students with no previous knowledge of the language, provides training in the comprehension, speaking, reading and writing of Italian.
Note: Not open to students with credit in Italian 30 or equivalent.
Italian 203 H(4-1)
Beginners' Italian II
A continuation of Italian 201.
Prerequisites: Italian 30, Italian 201 or equivalent.
Senior Courses
Italian 301 H(3-1T)
Second-Year Italian I
An intensive course in reading, writing and oral practice.
Prerequisites: Italian 203 or consent of the Department.
Italian 303 H(3-1T)
Second-Year Italian II
Further development of communication skills in Italian (listening, speaking, writing, reading), as well as the study of cultural issues in the Italian world with emphasis on reading.
Prerequisites: Italian 301 or consent of the Department.
Italian 305 H(3-1)
Introduction to Textual Analysis
Development of critical thinking and communicative skills through the analysis of selected literary and non literary texts.
Prerequisites: Italian 301 or consent of the Department.
Italian 307 H(3-1)
Communication
Study of different types of communication (print and electronic media, correspondence, business). Analysis of relevant aspects of Italian contemporary life.
Prerequisites: Italian 301 or consent of the Department.

Civilization: Culture and the Arts
Aspects of Italian civilization and contemporary cultural issues in Italian Studies.
Prerequisites: Italian 203 or consent of the Department.
Italian 401 H(3-1T)
Third-Year Italian I
A course in composition and conversation for advanced students in Italian. Selected readings from literary texts.
Prerequisites: Italian 301, 303 and one other half course at the 300 level (including Romance Studies 341), or consent of the Department.
Italian 403 H(3-1T)
Third-Year Italian II
Intensive study of Italian grammar with the goal of attaining greater proficiency in written and oral communication. Grammatical analysis, vocabulary enrichment and development of conversation skills dealing with cultural issues.
Prerequisites: Italian 401 or consent of the Department.
Italian 405 H(3-0)
Selected Works in Italian Literature
Introduction to Italian literature with particular emphasis on the novel and poetry.
Prerequisites: Italian 301, 303 and one other half course at the 300 level (including Romance Studies 341), or consent of the Department.

Significant social, cultural and historical issues in Italian society through the medium of film.

Selected Topics in Italian Studies I
Selected topics in Italian language, literature or civilization.
Prerequisites: Italian 301, 303 and one other half course at the 300 level in Italian or consent of the Department.

Interdisciplinary Study of Italian Culture
Capstone project in Italian studies. Discussion of selected topics related to students' field of concentration.
Prerequisites: Italian 401, 403 and one other half course at the 400 level, or consent of the Department.
Italian 503 H(3-0)
Advanced Textual Analysis
Discussion of selected topics in Italian language, literature or culture. Course designed to develop writing skills. Review of writing strategies, spelling, punctuation, expository and argumentative techniques, using various original sources taken from journalistic, scientific, and literary texts as well as from other media.
Prerequisites: Italian 305 and 403 or consent of the Department.
