Interim Vice-President (Research)

October 18, 2010

Attention All Staff and Faculty,

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Jon Meddings will take on the role of Interim Vice-President (Research) on November 1st. Dr. Meddings has been a long-time member of the University of Calgary's Faculty of Medicine and during his tenure was Head of the Division of Gastroenterology and in 2009, became the Vice Dean. Prior to coming to the University of Calgary, Dr. Meddings was at the University of Alberta where he was Chair of the Department of Medicine and a professor of Gastroenterology. Throughout his career, Dr. Meddings has proven to be a strong administrator and an accomplished researcher. He will provide excellent oversight of the research portfolio as we continue to work towards being one of the leading research-intensive universities in Canada.

I'd like to thank Dr. Robert Hache for taking on the role of acting Vice-President (Research) for the past month while also maintaining his position as Associate Vice-President (Research). Dr. Hache has been instrumental in helping the research team during this time of transition and has done a great job ensuring the momentum of the portfolio continues.

I would also like to announce that Dr. Sandy Murphree will be staying on as the Deputy Provost until June 30, 2012. Dr. Murphree is playing a key role in a number of areas including the advancement of the goals of the IS2 project and I am pleased that he will be in the role of Deputy Provost for an additional year.

As announced in a previous communication, searches for the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) as well as Vice-President (Research) will commence immediately.

Thank you.

Dr. Elizabeth Cannon
