Nephrology

Nephrology

The section of Nephrology has a complete multidisciplinary team to address the wide range of pediatric kidney disorders for children from Southern Alberta, Eastern British Columbia and Western Saskatchewan.

What We Do

The majority of the service is ambulatory care, with additional inpatient consultation to Alberta Children’s Hospital, Peter Lougheed Hospital , and the neonatal units across the city. Outreach clinics are also provided for some areas of Southern Alberta.

Hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplantation are major aspects of the inpatient service.

A comprehensive video-urodynamics service exists to investigate bladder function. An outpatient formal Urotherapy Program offers practical management of voiding dysfunction. The section works closely with paediatric urology having a common clinic area and offering a joint Nephrology/Urology Clinic once a month. The Nephrology Section, together with urologists, provides input to monthly myelomeningocoele clinics.

The following is a list of the clinics provided, in addition to the general Nephrology clinic:

  • Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis Clinic
  • Cystinosis Clinic
  • Joint Nephrology and Urology clinic
  • Joint Nephrology and Rheumatology Clinic
  • Kidney Transplant Clinic
  • Meningomyelocele clinic
  • Young Adult Transplant Clinic at Foothills Medical Centre
  • Outreach Clinics in Lethbridge and Medicine Hat

A physician Referral is required for all Clinics. Please contact your physician or family doctor.

The section has monthly teaching rounds, biweekly radiology rounds, monthly review of transplanted patients and a monthly review of patients with chronic kidney disease. There is close liaison with the adult Nephrology Section through weekly joint city wide rounds, renal biopsy rounds and journal club meetings.

The Nephrology Section participates in teaching of medical students in the Renal/Endocrine course and paediatric aspects of renal disease in the Women’s and Child Health course. Paediatric residents receive teaching as part of their weekly sessions and paediatric residents have a one month rotation in the Nephrology Clinic. A paediatric nephrology fellowship program provides clinical and research training with the opportunity for electives in relevant services such as adult nephrology, transplantation, renal histopathology etc.
