About UCalgary Music Theatre

About us...in a few words.

The UofC Operetta Company is an arm of the Music Department and has been putting on full-length musical theatre and opera performances since 2006. What a lot of people don't realize is that it's rumoured that UofC had a musical-theatre troupe many-moons ago, but the enthusiasm for the program waned over time and it ceased operation.

Enter, Dr. Colleen Whidden.  With great foresight, rekindled enthusiasm and a lot of patience, she took on the project of bringing back the great opportunity and avenue for artists to partake in mounting great musical theatre shows in a university setting.

Since then, the company, has seen huge growth and success over its last several seasons (years) in production.  With recent credit including West Side Story, The Music Man, Seussical the Musical, Children of Eden, and Guys and Dolls, there is never a dull moment on-stage.  We have been putting on least two full-scale musical theatre and opera productions for the last 4 years in the University Theatre - at Craigie Hall.  Combine 40+ cast members, 25+ pit orchestra musicians and a full backstage crew - you'll begin to get a glimpse of our shows.

Working closely with both Jeremy Brown and Bill Jordan, as heads of the Music Department, to ensure the continual resources and full support of the music department, we continue to mount great production projects.  The goal of this company is to provide a great platform for performance in a non-recital atmosphere.  We are the ensemble that gives music students (and anyone who want to audition from the university and community) the opportunity to perform in both musical theatre style as well as classic opera style shows each year.

In 2014, the UCalgary Operetta Co. underwent a rebranding after partnering with the University of Calgary School of Creative and Performing Arts, now under the name UCalgary Music Theatre.
