Canada's International Trade Minister Peter Van Loan recognized the University of Calgary—Qatar as one of the examples of how trade between the two countries is growing. Canada and Qatar have partnered in a number of projects in the oil and gas industry for a number of years, but now the education and health sectors are becoming more prevalent.

Qatar was the final stop of the Minister’s tour of the region which also included Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Kuwait.

"The main purpose behind the visit has been to create better awareness among the people of Qatar and Canada about the blossoming relations between the two countries in recent years," Van Loan told reporters.

Dr. Carolyn Byrne, Dean and CEO of UCQ stated, "Our University is proud to be a contributor in efforts to expand trade relations between Canada and Qatar. We are extremely grateful and honored that the State of Qatar recognizes Canada's education standards as some of the best in the world and chose the University of Calgary, from a number of world class universities, to deliver a Bachelor of Nursing Degree Program here."

The Canadian Embassy in Qatar is slated to open in May 2011. It will be located on the 30th floor of the Tornado Tower in the West Bay area.
