Strengthening ties to China

By Claudio Perrella

Strengthening the University of Calgary's long standing relationship with China is at the heart of President Elizabeth Cannon's first international visit since taking office July 1, 2010.

Dr. Cannon and various university representatives travelled to China Oct. 12-20 in order to visit with other academic institutions in Hong Kong and Beijing as well as meet with Chinese government officials, the Canadian ambassador to China and take part in Minister of Advanced Education and Technology Doug Horner’s mission to the region. The mission will see new agreements aimed at building Alberta's technological and innovation capacity while renewing relationships in education, research initiatives and technology commercialization.

Dr. Cannon also connected with the alumni community in the region, which number more than 1,000 and include many respected business people and community members.

Noting China's importance to the U of C, Dr. Cannon said, in a recent dialogue session with faculty and staff, that China is the country with which the university has the most institutional agreements and the country from which we attract a significant number of international students.
