Dinos Volleyball headed back to nationals

For the first time since 2003, the University of Calgary Dinos men's volleyball team will head to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship tournament.

The Dinos swept their playoff series against the Manitoba Bisons on the weekend to qualify for the Canada West Final Four next weekend in Edmonton. Canada West has three berths assigned to the national tournament, to be held in Kamloops, B.C. March 12-14, in addition to the host spot occupied by Thompson Rivers University.

The TRU WolfPack defeated the Brandon Bobcats Sunday afternoon in Game 3 of their best-of-three quarterfinal series, earning a berth to the Final Four - meaning all four teams at the conference tournament will advance to Kamloops a week later.

The Canada West Final Four now becomes a seeding tournament for the CIS championship. Calgary will play Trinity Western in one semi-final match Saturday, March 6 at the Universiade Pavillion in Edmonton, while Thompson Rivers will take on the host Alberta Golden Bears in the other semi-final.

The Dinos last attended the CIS championship in 2003, when they finished fourth at the event hosted by the University of Alberta. Calgary is currently ranked No. 4 in the nation after a 13-5 season and a second straight second-place finish in the Canada West regular season.
