Plans unveiled for international gymnastics competition

The University of Calgary Gymnastics Club has announced the creation of a new international gymnastics competition in March of 2014.

The University of Calgary International Cup will feature gymnasts of all ages and levels competing in a multitude of disciplines, culminating with a showcase competition of some of the world’s best gymnasts.

“I think there’s always real excitement for athletes and fans of gymnastics to see international competition,” says Tony Smith, the chief gymnastics advisor at the University of Calgary Gymnastics Club and national team director of the Canadian men’s gymnastics team. “Our goal is to provide an exceptional environment for Canada’s young gymnasts to compete in, and give Calgarians the opportunity to watch some of the best athletes in the world.”

The event will run March 21-23, 2014 at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium. The competition builds on the momentum created by the Kyle Shewfelt Gymnastics Festival, which was held in conjunction with the University of Calgary club for the last three years.

Shewfelt will open his own gymnastics club in the city’s southeast this autumn, and organizers felt the time was right to return to the tradition of the University of Calgary club hosting its own March competition.

“We have been honoured to be the host of the Kyle Shewfelt Gymnastics Festival for the past three years,” says Smith. “We certainly wish him all the best in his new club, and I can tell you we’re looking forward to continuing the tradition of a great competition at the University of Calgary.”

The University of Calgary Gymnastics Club is one of Canada’s national training centres and over the past ten years been home to 14 Canadian senior national team members including Olympic gymnasts Kyle Shewfelt, Grant Golding and Nathan Gafuik.
