The group has posted insurance basics and procedures for filing a complaint on the Haskayne website, and is hosting Flood Insurance 101, a discussion board where individuals’ questions are answered by one or more of the experts.

The discussion board went live July 12, open to all homeowners and business owners affected by the flood. Questions are coming in from businesses as well as from condominium and single family homeowners. Best efforts are made to answer all questions within 24 hours.

Flood Insurance 101 stemmed from a faculty-wide discussion on how the business school could use its expertise to help those affected by the flood. With unprecedented property damage and confusion around coverage, the insurance group came forward with their plan. The architects are Haskayne professors Norma Nielson and Anne Kleffner who put out a call to the alumni group to help out. Among the participating alumni experts are senior members of the insurance industry and the risk manager for the City of Kelowna.

In terms of faculty expertise, Nielson holds the Chair in Insurance and Risk Management. She has done research for the Property and Casualty Insurance Compensation Corporation, the Insurance Bureau of Canada, and the Law Commission of Canada, and is widely published in more than 50 journals. Kleffner teaches about property and liability insurance as well as risk management. She has published research in The Journal of Risk and Insurance, Risk Management and Insurance Review, The Journal of Insurance Regulation and The Ivey Business Journal.

Risk management and insurance is one of 18 specializations available to Haskayne Bachelor of Commerce students and is the only program of its kind in Western Canada. 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of the program’s first graduating class.
