Photo by Nanako FuruyamaAll this week, sex, gender and wellness will be in the spotlight as Sexual and Gender Wellness Week returns to the University of Calgary. Back by popular demand, and for the second year in a row, the program is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to explore all things sex-related.

Sexual and Gender Wellness Week is growing into one of the most anticipated weeks of the year. It features interactive displays, a carnival, two performances of the Vagina Monologues, as well as seminars and workshops on topics as diverse as Orgasm Information for Women, the Bible and Homosexuality: A Christian Perspective, An Introduction to Kink and BDSM, Modern Masculinities, and Relationships: Healthy or Not.

“Sexuality and how we express our gender is core to who we are as people,” said Carolyn Claire, a registered psychologist at the SU Wellness Centre and one of the program’s organizers. “Whether people are interested in talking about their relationships, gender expression, or healthy sexuality, there are lots of opportunities to engage in discussion, learn and have fun throughout the week.”

Scheduled programs are aimed at providing honest, open and correct information on sex and sexuality, and make it available to young people who may not have had access to a comprehensive education on sexuality during high school. With so much misinformation out there, Sexual and Gender Wellness Week is an especially important event for many young people.

“For many students, as they come to university, they begin their transition into adulthood, and there can be natural questions about their identity” says Claire. “It seems really important to offer a venue and a forum for conversation and places for people to get accurate information.”

The University of Calgary SU Wellness Centre and the Students’ Union jointly organize Sexual and Gender Wellness Week. The entire campus community is invited to participate in all of the events, seminars and workshops held throughout the week. Many events have even been scheduled for the noon hour or after 4:30 p.m. to accommodate faculty and staff.
