Wrap the year

UToday HomeDecember 7, 2012

Tasty treats and festive music were enjoyed by students, faculty, staff and volunteers at the University of Calgary’s holiday celebration and United Way wrap-up event in MacEwan Hall on Dec. 5.

During her remarks, President Elizabeth Cannon asked the crowd to reflect together on the achievements of the university community in 2012. “It seems that every day we hear about another great student success story, about excellence in academics, research, leadership, service and community-building, and athletics.”

Among 2012’s milestones was the unique support of the United Way by students, faculty and staff. This year the university community was asked to raise $350,000 to support the United Way in their efforts to make positive changes in Calgary and area. President Cannon announced that we are very close to our goal as we approach the donation deadline on Dec. 15, and encouraged the university community to continue their support online.

Lucy Miller, President and CEO, United Way of Calgary and Area was in attendance for the announcement, and offered her heartfelt thanks for the creative ways our campus community raised the funds.

Stations were set up at the event to take donations for the Students’ Union Campus Food Bank and the United Way. Kat Dornian of CJSW and the University of Calgary Jazz Orchestra put the crowd in a festive mood and guests danced along to the holiday tunes.
