More than $20,000 was awarded to undergraduate researchers at a special ceremony held Dec. 6. The winners of the 7th annual Students’ Union Undergraduate Research Symposium were announced in 13 different categories. A team of 35 University of Calgary faculty and staff judges had the difficult task of determining the best submissions.

During the symposium’s keynote presentation, Reed Ferber shared the story of how he started the Running Injury Clinic, and encouraged students in the audience to be persistent when pursuing their research ideas.

Eighty-four students shared their research during the symposium through poster presentations in Mac Hall on Nov. 29. The symposium provides a great networking venue for student researchers, and gives students the chance to meet a number of professional researchers.

More than 250 members of the campus community took time to visit the symposium. For the first time, a committee of students — lead by Kenya-Jade Pinto, the Students’ Union’s vice-president (academic) — came together to create a set of criteria and a strong rubric for judging each project.

“Every year, the symposium becomes a better and more exciting opportunity to support and recognize exceptional students and their work in research,” said Pinto. “The quality of presentations was exceptional and I congratulate everyone who took part and attended this great event.”
