Sandy Murphree will return to the University of Calgary to work as interim deputy provost until the end of 2013.Sandy Murphree will return to the University of Calgary to work as interim deputy provost until the end of 2013.I am pleased to announce the appointment of Sandy Murphree as interim deputy provost from Sept. 1 to Dec. 31, 2013. To take on this interim role, Sandy will return to the University of Calgary on a contract basis.

Sandy has been a fundamental part of the Office of the Provost before, having served as the interim deputy provost and vice-provost without portfolio from July 1, 2010 until June 30, 2012.  Prior to that appointment, he was the dean of the Faculty of Science for five years. Sandy is among the first recipients of the university’s U Make a Difference Award.

Sandy came to the University of Calgary in 1975 as a postdoctoral fellow in physics and astronomy. He is an experimental space physicist whose research efforts deal with the physics of the earth's magnetosphere and, in particular, the processes resulting in the aurora.

With his deep knowledge of the University of Calgary and his considerable administrative and leadership expertise, Sandy will again prove to be a vital asset to the Office of the Provost and provide stability during a time of transition. The deputy provost position is a critical leadership role necessary to advance the strategies of the Academic Plan and the university’s Eyes High strategic direction.

I would like to thank Benedikt Hallgrimsson for his service as the deputy provost since July 1, 2012. During this past year, Benedikt has played a pivotal role within the provost’s team and his leadership through major changes has been instrumental in the success of our team. Highlights of his work include playing a key leadership role in developing our International Strategy, facilitating the production of the Comprehensive Institutional Plan, leading negotiations with the Faculty Association and sharpening our focus on quality assurance processes. We wish Benedikt the best as he continues to play an important role on campus, returning to the Faculty of Medicine where he will focus on furthering his research program.

Please join me in welcoming Sandy Murphree on his return to the team in the Office of the Provost and in thanking Benedikt Hallgrimsson for his contributions.

Dru Marshall
Provost and Vice-President (Academic)
