Young has been a professor of political science at the University of Calgary since 1997 and was Associate Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies in 2010-11. For the past year she has served as our Interim Vice-Provost (Graduate Education) and Interim Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. She has done an excellent job in the interim role and has demonstrated a broad understanding of the academy here at the university, as well as a deep knowledge of the issues facing graduate education in Canada. Her vision to enhance the graduate student experience aligns with our Eyes High strategic direction and priorities in the Academic Plan. Young’s appointment also brings welcome continuity during a period of transition in the university’s senior leadership team.

Young’s many accomplishments in Graduate Studies include working closely with graduate program directors to develop program changes, improve recruitment practices, and implement effective budgeting models for graduate scholarship support. She took the lead for the university on the analysis and communication of results from the 2010 Canadian Graduate and Professional Student Survey.

Young is an accomplished scholar in the area of Canadian politics, with a particular research focus on political parties, election finances and women’s participation in political life. She is the author of numerous journal articles, book chapters, conference papers and presentations; the co-author of four books; and the author of Feminists and Party Politics (UBC Press, 2000). She has sat on many academic and professional committees both inside and outside the university. Young holds a BA (Hons) from the University of Winnipeg, a MA from Carleton University, and a PhD from the University of Toronto. At the University of Calgary she is the recipient of a Killam Research Fellowship, the Faculty of Social Science Distinguished Teaching Award, and the Faculty of Social Science Distinguished Researcher Award.

I would like to express my appreciation for the contributions of the Advisory Selection Committee members to the search and selection process for this decanal position.
