Visiting Elective Training in specialty and subspecialty RCPSC and CFPC Residency Training Programs is available; however specific program availability is subject to program capacity and approval from the Program Director.

Electives are available to both Residents who are enrolled in a Canadian training programs accredited by the RCPSC or CFPC and Residents enrolled in training programs outside of Canada.

The application process for Visiting Electives should begin 4-6 months before the desired start date. Specific registration requirements for your elective can take up to 2 months to complete. Failure to provide enough lead time for processing can cause the cancellation of your elective.

Please note: The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta have revised their requirement for International Medical Graduates electives in regards to source verification. The new policy states that for IMG electives, who will be coming for elective periods up to three months in duration, the CPSA will waive the requirement for source verification of their medical degree through physicansapply.ca . This will granted on a one time basis. If a resident or fellow return at a future date or decide to extend their elective period beyond the initial three months, they will be required to submit their medical degree for source verification.
