The UCLIC program (previously called RICC) presents an innovative approach to educating physicians by placing them with experience rural family physicians for nine months of their final year of medical school.  The goal of the program was to produce high quality physicians with a good understanding and holistic approach to an undifferentiated patient.  At the same time, students participating in this program developed a deeper understanding and appreciation for rural life in general and through this understanding are more likely to return to this setting to practice.

This new approach attracted some media attention so that a press conference was held in May 2008 at the University of Calgary medical school.  Much interest was also shown in the local communities.
