DATABASES/DIRECTORIES - Tests & Testing

NOTES:The literature on tests and testing is large and complex. There are a number of approaches the researcher can make to find background information or information on specific tests. In this section are a few suggested methods for finding information. They include: 1) the online public access catalogue (OPAC), 2) Directories both print and web-based, and 3) databases.

1) OPACS
A search of the college/university OPAC will find books on measurement, evaluation, and testing. For background material search by the Library of Congress Subject Headings for books more specifically in the sport sciences and physical education field use the subject headings:

2) DIRECTORIES
Directories - Print

Directories - Online

ETS Test Collection
This Educational Testing Service website has a collection of tests that were acquired from a variety of U.S. publishers and individual test authors. Foreign tests are also included in the collection, including some from Canada, Great Britain, and Australia.

3) DATABASES
To augment the above sources and find specific tests three databases are recommended. They include SPORTDiscus, PsycINFO, and Medline/PubMed. In some instances the name of a test is used as a descriptor (e.g. Harvard Step Test in SPORTDiscus), however most test names are found in the Abstract field (sometimes the title). Therefore a free text search can be employed. For example, in SPORTDiscus (and the other databases), a researcher should perform a free text search for the Exercise-induced feeling inventory (EFI) using the full test name and/or the acronym. Other approaches can be made through use of the descriptors, e.g. in SPORTDiscus use:
Many other combinations can be used depending on the type of test required.

List of Named Tests in SPORTDiscus
The above list may be found as an appendice to the Search Guide for Finding Test / Testing Information in SPORTDiscus. This list was organized in Feb 2003 after an extensive search of SPORTDiscus records and other sources.
