Specialty:

History of sport and the body; cultural studies and critical theory.

Current Work:

  1. History of modern sport movements: Amateur Sport, Olympics and Mountaineering.
  2. Life History and Olympic Legacy: A three-year ethnographic study of speed skaters at the Olympic Oval in Calgary.

Desired Outcome:

With both research projects, I am attempting to understand the way human beings integrate sport and physical activity into the patterns of their everyday lives. Ultimately, I hope to write and publish a book that will advance a theory of sport and physical activity. This will be a humanistic (rather than a social science) theory. The emphasis will be on explaining how sport and physical activity add meaning to people’s lives.
