About Us

We live in an age increasingly dominated by electronic communication. Whether we like it or not, our whole life is sitting on the Internet making computer security pertinent to everything from medical record databases and cash machine withdrawals to electronic fund transfers between countries.

About ISPIA

Welcome to the Institute for Security, Privacy and Information Assurance (ISPIA)

ISPIA is a multi-disciplinary research centre at the University of Calgary devoted to research and development towards providing security and privacy in information communication systems. ISPIA research focuses on the design, evaluation, and implementation of cryptographic algorithms and protocols, and design and development of security architectures and systems for information communication and real life applications. ISPIA members include researchers in mathematics, computer science, engineering, physics, history, and law, and professionals in the information security and law enforcement sectors.

ISPIA's research includes a broad spectrum of areas ranging from theoretical cryptography and quantum information science to software security, malicious code, network and operating systems security, and technical and legal issues surrounding privacy and digital rights. Our work incorporates abstract theory, large-scale hardware and software simulation, prototyping and development of special purpose hardware.

ISPIA members coordinate and offer courses in security in the Faculty of Science. ISPIA organizes and conducts outreach activities to build partnerships with industry, government and local community.

ISPIA provides consultancy in the areas of information security and cryptography.

ISPIA's Research

ISPIA's research centers around all aspects of information protection and includes a broad spectrum of areas ranging from mathematical cryptography and quantum information science to software security and malicious code, network and operating systems penetration, and the technical and legal issues surrounding privacy.

Our work incorporates abstract theory, large-scale software simulation, and the fabrication of special purpose hardware.

Outreach and Teaching

In addition, we conduct outreach and teaching activities in cryptography as well as information security and privacy. ISPIA's partnerships with academic institutions, professional organizations and industry are providing valuable opportunities for collaborative research and training.

Our students receive the kind of education that will prepare them for professional as well as academic careers in cryptography and the burgeoning field of information security.
