Flatbed Scanner

Our flatbed scanners can be operated using dedicated scanning applications (i.e., Photoshop Plug-ins are not available). Most commonly, the software you would use is Epson Scan, but Image Capture is an option on all scanning stations.

Please take great care to avoid placing anything on the glass that might scratch it (e.g., coil binder from a sketchbook).

Epson Expression 12000XL Large Format Flatbed (Main Lab, Station 15)

If you have items to scan that are opaque (usually paper) up to 12×18″, this is the scanner to use. You can find a brief set of operating instructions attached to the lid of the scanner.

Our previous large format scanner, the Epson Expression 10000XL, is installed in the Small Lab at Station E. We do expect this to fail in the near future, but we will keep it available as long as it continues to work.

Epson Perfection V850 Pro Flatbed for Transparent Media (Main Lab, Station 05)

This scanner is to be used for scanning film or other transparent media up to 4″ x 5″ negatives. Holders for various forms of transparent media are kept beside the scanner. If you have 35 mm film or slides, you can also use the Nikon Coolscan scanner (Small Lab, Station J). The V850 will be quicker if you have a batch of photos from the same shoot (i.e. similar exposure, lighting, etc.) while the Coolscan gives you good control over individual shots.

Instructions on how to scan using Epson Scan software and transparencies is available on Epson’s web site:

  • Epson Perfection V850 Pro User’s Guide: HTML, PDF (Note: Some software instructions will be for the older Epson Scan software, not Epson Scan 2)
  • Placing Film or Slides on the Scanner (the document mat has already been removed, so you may skip to the instructions for the media you are scanning)
