Mission of the Gastrointestinal Research Group


To advance knowledge through research and to train highly qualified personnel in the study of gastrointestinal tract and liver in health and human diseases.

Who is GIRG


The Gastrointestinal Research Group (GIRG) is a multi-disciplinary group comprised of 28 full and 7 associate faculty members from a variety of basic science and clincal departments, which include the Department of Microbiology, Immonology & Infectious Diseases, Physiology & Parmacology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Medicine, Community Health Sciences, Pediatrics, Surgery and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

Most members of GIRG are involved with laboratory based research, while others perform clinical research.  There are some faculty members of GIRG who are involved with both laboratory and clinical research.

The laboratories of GIRG are located on the first floor of the Health Sciences Centre of the Faculty of Medicine, which is adjacent to the Foothills Medical Centre.
