Providing services to people who are homeless is a challenging undertaking. This certificate, the first of its kind in Canada, provides basic skills and practices necessary for frontline workers to engage in interdisciplinary practice and to provide appropriate interventions for people who are homeless. The Level I Certification provides a broad overview of the Housing First model and prepares professionals to work effectively, competently, and ethically with both clients and with their agency. It prepares front-line practitioners to work with homeless individuals regardless of their agency, credentials, or experience. It educates practitioners on how to navigate a complex system composed of government, mental health, medical, and social service agencies. The Level I program provides training on how to effectively manage client caseloads, provide linkage to best serve the client's needs, and skills to effectively communicate and advocate for the client. Mental health and drugs and alcohol are also a focus due to the high level of prevalence among clients. Finally, it teaches awareness of diversity and culture, proper professional conduct, and the importance of ethical behaviour and decision-making, as well as common legal issues faced by this population.
