University of Calgary

Greetings from the Faculty

Welcome to the web site of the Central and Northern Alberta Region of the Faculty of Social Work! As the only social work degree-granting faculty in the province, we are pleased to offer undergraduate and graduate level education from our Edmonton location to students in central and northern Alberta.

At our home base in Edmonton, we offer the BSW and MSW programs and administer Learning Circles BSW programs taught in Grande Prairie, Red Deer and Fort McMurray. We recently offered a one-time MSW program in collaboration with Blue Quills First Nations College that focused on practice in First Nations and Métis communities and the students convocated in June 2010.

Brief History

The University of Calgary has provided degree level social work education in Edmonton since 1974 and we now offer programs across central and northern Alberta through our Edmonton location.

World Social Work Day Celebration in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

On March 19th at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Social Work, Central and Northern Region, students and staff met to celebrate World Social Work Day. We began with a potluck that encouraged students to bring food from their different cultures. We then Skyped one student, doing her final social work practicum in Australia, and she told us of the work that she is doing in Adelaide. She spoke of the differences and similarities to social work between Canada and Australia. We then Skyped a former MSW student, now working in El Salvador, and he gave us a detailed account of the history of this country and his work as a social worker there.  We finished the evening by participating in a World Café, facilitated by our own Richard Feehan, where we looked at three questions: 1) From the Skype conversations, what assumptions do you have about social work practice in Australia, El Salvador or any other country?; 2) What social work values do you think are universal?; and 3) How, in our local context, might social workers enhance culturally relevant social work services that embraces the diverse population of Edmonton?

Door prizes were given and everyone had a good time.
