French Centre
This program provides university recognition for prescribed programs of studying French as a second language (FSL). Two certificate levels --comprising non-university-credit courses-- are offered, and may be taken on their own or as stepping stones toward the French Language Studies Certificate, an advanced program offered through Continuing Education that includes university-credit courses from U of C's Department of French, Italian and Spanish.
Each program comprises 140 hours and can be completed in approximately one and a half years. Students who take both certificates will be able to complete them in less than three years. These estimates are based on a student taking at least one course per session.
The Certificate in French Language and Culture - FSL Foundations is ideal for the beginning French learner. It is made up of non-university-credit Continuing Education courses that equip learners with a solid base of grammar and oral skills necessary to acquire the basic skills required for communication in French.

This Certificate in French Language and Culture - FSL Intermediate is for individuals who already possess basic communication skills in French. This program builds on the skills acquired in the Foundations certificate, or through previous learning. More advanced Continuing Education courses equip learners with a solid base of grammatical structures as well as the oral skills necessary to communicate fluently in French.
The Experiential Learning Component may be chosen as an elective in the Intermediate Level certificate. Experiential learning is the use of French outside of the classroom. Suitable activities include community events, theatre, films, music or dance events in French, or travel. Students must submit proof of participation (ticket stubs, a journal or essay summarizing involvement)
