Department of Family Medicine
Welcome to the University of Calgary Family Medicine Residency Program!
This is the start of an amazing two years in your life during which time you will take what you have learned at medical school and build on the competencies you need to become a Family Physician. You will learn how to manage the common and not-so-common conditions seen in Primary Care; in health care teams you will look after and be responsible for patients and their families over a period of time; you will learn about the natural progression of disease; you will come to understand the critical role of the doctor-patient relationship and the importance of the Family Physician in caring for and supporting patients and their families, both during times of crisis and times of calm.
To make this happen, we will provide you with the learning opportunities and resources you need to achieve the competencies of the graduating Family Physician; we will provide great teaching by great teachers who will concentrate on you as a Resident in the full knowledge that 2 years is only the start of your learning as a Family Physician and we will go out of our way to support you throughout the Program, making your health and well-being our Number One priority.
With the proposed changes in Family Medicine training being developed and implemented across Canada, the next two years are going to be an exciting and dynamic time to be a Family Medicine Resident. Like all Family Medicine Programs we will be moving to a “Triple-C” curriculum with a focus on Comprehensive care; a curriculum that is Centred in Family Medicine and is based on Continuity of care and education. Even in your 2 years with us, you will be part of these changes and I hope you will be able to contribute to how these are developed and implemented, both for your fellow Residents now and for Family Medicine Residents coming to Calgary in the future.
So, its all here for you…ready and waiting! This is a Program that believes very much that you are adults. You are treated as adults and you learn as adults. That means it’s up to you to enter the Program with your runners on and an energy bar in your pocket; to engage with your Preceptors; to identify your own learning needs and to ensure you maximise your learning opportunities to meet them. If you do, then I can pretty well guarantee a very positive and enjoyable experience for you.
I very much look forward to getting to know you better over the coming 2 years and would like to take this opportunity to wish you all success during your time with us.
Welcome aboard and don’t worry about being new. As you can see, you are in good company.
