Working Alone?
Have you ever wondered how the latest scientific research makes its way onto the front page of a newspaper? Need to organize a funding announcement but don’t know where to start? Do you have a story you think should be featured on the University of Calgary website or in a university publication? There are a thousand stories to be told here at the University of Calgary, with fascinating research, discoveries and projects occurring every week. And we want to tell them.
Why? Because increasing awareness for your research and field of expertise is critical in attracting public support. That in turn leads to government funding, development and resources to further your work and strengthen the university’s reputation as a place that top-level faculty and students want to be. “Painless publicity” may be a pipe dream, but having the right tools and knowing where to turn for help will go a long way when it comes to sharing your work with the general public.
The media relations office at University of Calgary – University Relations has decades worth of experience in Canadian journalism and a firm understanding of print, broadcast and the ever-evolving social media scene. We’ve developed a short (approx. 2 hour) introductory communications workshop for faculty, staff and students. Delivered in partnership with faculties and institutes across campus, the session outlines the wide range of support services available, and gives an overview of the University of Calgary’s communications goals and tactics—with practical tips for dealing with the mass media to help you get positive publicity for your work. Then if you want more, we offer one-on-one media training so you’re confident and ready to face the cameras!
