If you were asked to describe a child with Attention- Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), what would you say? You’d probably comment on their energetic behaviour, inability to sit still, and lack of focus. However, that is only one small aspect of these children. Children with ADHD are often bright children who view the world in an innovative way. Much of the literature field in ADHD is deficit-focused – identifying areas in which these children perform worse than children without ADHD. However, many children are successful in a number of areas (e.g., academically, socially, athletically) and the current research project is interested in highlighting areas in which children with ADHD demonstrate ability, rather than disability. What allows children with ADHD to be successful and how can we support them to reach their potential? Results from a large-scale project examining strengths in children with ADHD will be presented, along with preliminary results from a school ba sed pilot intervention project.

The third annual Summer Institute in Peacebuilding and Social Justice will be offered as a block week course (5days), housed in the Faculty of Social Work and open to students from any faculty registered in Graduate and Undergraduate degree programs, as well as members of the general public.

This is a perfect summer course for you to pump up your peacebuilding portfolio by exploring conflicts around the world with students and community members. If you don’t want to do class assignments, you are welcome to register as a public for $500/ person.

The Summer Institute will focus on understanding and analyzing selected theories and practice methods of peacebuilding / conflict resolution as seen through a social justice lens. Participants will be given a cross-disciplinary perspective on processes that lead toward progressive, non-violent change as it relates to the individual, society (local / global) and the environment.

Summer Institute Course instructor: Dr Jim Whitman is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Peace Studies, University of Bradford, UK, where he is Director of Postgraduate Programmes for the School of Social and International Studies.

He holds an MA from the University of St Andrews in Scotland and a Postgraduate Teaching Certificate from the University of Leeds. After completing his PhD in the Department of Peace Studies in 1992, he worked at the University of Cambridge for seven years before returning to Bradford.

He currently teaches BA and MA classes on Human Rights, International Relations, Environmental Politics and Global Governance at University of Bradford. Jim’s most recent books are The Fundamentals of Global Governance and The Geneva Conventions Under Assault.

A collaboration between the Advisor to the President on Women's Issues, the Women's Studies Program, and the Women's Resource Centre, The Future of Women's Studies in Alberta Symposium will be the first meeting that brings together the five Alberta universities offering Women's and Gender Studies programs.

On September 28 and 29, 2012, join faculty, student, and campus women's centre representatives as they examine the history of Women's Studies in Alberta, analyze the strengths and weaknesses of current practices, and debate the future of Women's Studies in the 21st century.

Because space is limited, registration is required. However, admission to both events is free.
