Film Screenings with CDWP Writer-in-Residence Shane Book and Filmmaker Michal Lavi

Free and open to all.

The Calgary Distinguished Writers Program 2016-2017 Writer-in-Residence Shane Book’s first poetry collection, Ceiling of Sticks, won the Prairie Schooner Book Prize and Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award. His second, Congotronic, won the Lampman Award and was shortlisted for the Canadian Authors Association Award, Ottawa Book Award, and 2015 Griffin Poetry Prize. His first film, Dust, won prizes at numerous festivals worldwide. His second, Praise and Blame, premiered in 2017. He was educated at NYU, the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and Stanford.

Michal Lavi is an independent filmmaker from Calgary, Alberta. Her films have screened in more than 40 international and national film festivals including Academy qualifiers, Flickers Rhode Island, Sofia International Film Festival, Raindance, Whistler Film Festival, and Soho International, among others. Her current film, Glamorous Gladys, a documentary about a 93-year-old cabaret singer. Her film Crowd Pleaser, the Mykonos Art Biennale and was chosen for the Short Corner in Cannes. Her previous films, Glue (2013), I Liked You Better Before (2011), Arithmetic - Annie’s Life in Numbers (2010) and Tying the Not (2008) were nominated to ten Rosie’s, Alberta Film and Television Awards, of which Glue won Best Cinematography in the Short Film Category. Michal is currently working on her first feature film, Road Trip to the Biggest Perogie in the World and writing a TV series drama about the sexually promiscuous residents of a seniors’ home. Michal also curates Tzavta - a monthly cultural dinner salon at Sidewalk Citizen Bakery, which she co-owns.
