Rothney Astrophysical Observatory Open House: Mystery of the Northern Lights

Submitted by kenben on Wed, 2009-11-04 14:57.

Description

As far south as Calgary we can see the waving and undulating colors that ripple through the night sky. These mysterious lights have intrigued astronomers for centuries.

Learn more about the latest research and the technology to capture and study the Northern Lights. We will feature a ‘what’s up’ in the autumn sky’ presentation and we will have our telescopes operating and astronomers ready to answer your questions. Galileo Moment - Experience a Galileo moment.

This is a chance for you to connect with the universe. It’s easy. First, have an astronomical experience such as look through a telescope, listen to an astronomer talk about his/her research, or maybe discover a comet, anything related to astronomy. Then get a trading card. This card will provide you with information on how to register your name in our Canada-wide listing. Once all the names are collected at the end of 2009, we will launch you into space! Well, your name, aboard the NEOSat Satellite.

To learn more about the program check our website, http://www.astronomycalgary.com/.

In the Sky - The best time of the year to view Jupiter through a telescope, because it will be at its closest to the earth and its brightest. Also, if possible, we will view the International Space Station and Iridium flares.

View celestial objects through our telescopes, including the 1.8 metre ARCT, one of the largest telescopes in Canada. See our asteroid hunting and comet chasing ‘Baker Nunn’ telescope. We also have a robotic telescope called the “Clark-Milone”, which will be open for viewing. Our terrace features an array of telescopes operated by astronomers from the U of C, the Telus World of Science and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Calgary Centre.

Loads of opportunities to see planets and stars!
