In February, we asked for stories from alumni who had launched what turned out to be lifelong relationships with their significant other at the U of C. Thirsk returns to campus for degree

With his record-setting space flight behind him, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Robert Thirsk, BSc'76, LLD'09, returned to campus Feb. 8 to accept the honorary degree he received "virtually" last July via live satellite downlink while aboard the International Space Station. "There's something special about Calgary—the can-do attitude and spirit of exploration—that immediately makes me comfortable and relaxed as soon as I arrive," said Thirsk. Learn more...

Groves owns the podium

Kristina Groves, BSc'04, became Canada's first multiple medallist at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver after earning a silver in the women's 1,500 metres long-track speed skating race at the Richmond Oval Feb. 21. Along with her silver medal, Kristina won a bronze in the women's 3,000 metres on Feb. 14 and placed fourth in the 1,000 metres that was won by fellow Canadian Christine Nesbitt. Bursaries help families succeed

A group of inspiring alumnae have joined together to help U of C students by creating the Family for Success bursaries. The $2,500 awards, which are given out to two students per year, are offered annually to continuing undergraduates in any faculty at the U of C. Learn more...

Haskayne alumnus appointed judge

William Tilleman, BComm'80, a lawyer with William A. Tilleman Professional Corporation, has been appointed Judge of the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta in Calgary. Tilleman has been a member of the U of C Senate, Dean's Community Council and the Board of Governors. He also has ties to Haskayne in that his father, the late Dr. William Tilleman Sr., was a member of Haskayne's accounting area for many years. Learn more...

Nickle Arts Museum receives $3M from City of Calgary

The City of Calgary has approved a contribution of $3.234 million towards the completion of The Nickle Arts Museum at its new location in the U of C's Taylor Family Digital Library. The building is scheduled to open in Spring 2011. Learn more...
