Alumni Association commits MBNA revenue to bursaries

Your Alumni Association is ensuring the continued growth of its scholarship and bursary program by being the first in Canada to commit all revenue from its partnership with MBNA Canada Bank to financially support current and future students. Sixty-four students, the most in any one year in the U of C's history, are receiving 2009-10 Alumni Association bursaries valued at $149,000 to enhance their studies and student experience.

Designers win award for public space

The design of one of Calgary's newest public spaces, led by a Faculty of Environmental Design professor and seven alumni, has won two prestigious awards: the Canadian Architect Award of Merit and the City of Calgary's Mayor's Urban Design Award. Learn more...

Everest climb to benefit World Vision

Next month, Wiktor Mazur, BSc'06, will start climbing Mt. Everest to raise money for World Vision. Aiming to reach the summit before June, Mazur says hopes to do his part to give back to the people that need it most. "Climbing at high altitudes involves suffering and sacrifices, and living in conditions similar to those faced by the poorest in the world. It's not something many people can relate to, but it is something that makes me appreciate all the things I have in my daily life that I take for granted." Learn more...

Coast to coast for ALS

Leslie MacDonald, BN'09, watched her father, Bob, suffer with Bulbar ALS for a year before he died in August 2003. Now a registered nurse in Halifax, Leslie will raise money for ALS this summer as she leads a cycle trip across Canada, setting out from Vancouver on June 5 and ending in Summerside, PEI in early August. Your advice for the next generation of graduates

Now in its second year, graduatingthisyear.com provides support and resources to students in their final semester. It contains info every grad needs—about Convocation, getting a job, getting their finances in order and entering the next stage of their lives. We are looking for participation from you—alumni who have been in their shoes and have the experience that can help the next generation. We are looking for your brief stories and snippets of advice on such topics as:

  • what is some great advice you received?
  • what is some advice you wish you had taken?
  • what do you know now that you wish you knew when you graduated?

Seeing gifts at work

Laura McLeod, BSc'75, MD'78, and husband John Humphrey feel passionately about giving back to the university through the Faculty and Staff Campaign and have donated to various areas in both of their faculties, including student scholarships to alleviate some of the costs of medical school and bursaries to allow classical archeology students to travel abroad. U of C considers tuition market modifiers

This year, Alberta's provincial government invited post-secondary institutions to submit proposals for one-time fee increases (known as 'market modifiers') in professional programs or specialty areas. The U of C has proposed additional fees for business, law, medicine, graduate level education and engineering to bring tuition in those areas in line with programs offered by other Canadian universities. The U of C is currently discussing these market modifiers with student leaders and faculties.
