Remote Access (SSH and Samba)

Our CPSC servers are accessible via the Internet for those traveling abroad or working from home using SFTP (SSH).   Unix home directories are also available remotely via Samba.  The SSH and Samba protocols are described in detail below.

PLEASE NOTE:  To connect to Samba remotely, you will need to install a Virtual Private Network (VPN) provided by Campus IT.  VPN provides a safe way to connect to the University of Calgary network from any off-campus location.

SSH Clients

Various SSH clients are available. Please note that the list below is provided for your convenience and is not an endorsement of any of the following products by the Department of Computer Science.

SSH CLIENT SPLATFORM URL
FileZilla Windows, Unix and MacOSX filezilla-project.org
puTTY Windows Download | Official Website
OpenSSH Unix and MacOSX www.openssh.com

Example: Connecting from Windows via PuTTY

  • On Windows, use a SSH client such as puTTY (see download link above)
  • Download puttydownload.zip to your desktop
  • Extract the zip to your desktop
  • Run the setup.bat file
  • To connect to a compute server, double-click on one of the shortcuts created on your desktop
  • When first connecting, you may need to verify the fingerprint (see below)

> VIEW STEP-BY-STEP IMAGES OF HOW TO INSTALL & USE PUTTY

Verifying a Secure Shell Connection

When connecting to an unknown host using SSH for the first time, you will be asked whether you trust this host with a given fingerprint with a message similar to:

The authenticity of host 'unknownhost (x.x.x.x)' can't be established.
RSA key fingerprint is xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx.
Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?

To verify the identity of the host, make sure that the public key fingerprint matches those of our compute servers.

Samba

Unix home directories are also available remotely via samba.

  • From Windows, the network drive mapping is: \\samba.cs.ucalgary.ca\username
  • From MacOS, the path is: smb://samba.cs.ucalgary.ca/username

To help you map your network drive remotely through server samba.cpsc.ucalgary.ca, please refer t these how-to step-by-step guides:

> HOW TO MAP WINDOWS PC VIA SAMBA

> HOW TO MAP MAC OS X VIA SAMBA

When mapping a unix filesystem through server samba.cpsc.ucalgary.ca, the connection should be redirected via DFS to the fileserver on which the requested data resides. Ideally you would always use samba.cpsc.ucalgary.ca but some operating systems do not support DFS and the redirect fails. In these cases, please determine the actual fileserver name you need from the chart below and use that in place of samba.cpsc.ucalgary.ca.
