Transition to Fall - The 6 Week Slump

Summer is officially over even though we had the Hottest First Day of Fall on Record!

The Fall means transition especially for University Students.  A model of Transition (Hopson & Adams, 1976) shows the stages we go through as we experience a major life transition.

Now imagine that this cycle is compressed for the university experience into one short semester.  That means that as we start university we are usually excited, hopeful with lots of plans of how this semester is going to be different and how

We are going to be successful in school, making friends, finding a part-time job, being active in clubs & groups and so on and so on.

For some students as you reach the 6 week mark on the fall calendar you can be starting to feel the "uncertainty, loss of confidence, confusion and so on" .  University has not quite turned out as you hoped - you have not kept up with the readings, made the new friends etc.... You feel disappointed and want to make it better but not just sure how....

There are lots and lots of People and Resources on Campus that would like to help you out.... Here are just a few:

  • Improve your Study Skills, Time Management, Test Writing ability by doing a Student Success Seminar through the Office of Student Experience, going to the Academic Success website - looking at articles or doing one of our on-line workshops, booking an Academic Clinic appointment
  • Unsure of your career direction..... attend a Career Clinic and see a specialized career counsellor that can give you advice and direction
  • Learn communication skills by seeing a counsellor or going to the Personal Counselling section of the website with many excellent articles and resources
  • Need more Balance, find out how
