The Calgary Institute for the Humanities was established at the University of Calgary in 1976 to foster advance study and research in a broad range of subject areas. It supports work in the traditional disciplines such as languages and literatures, philosophy, and history, as well as in philosophical and historical aspects of the social sciences, arts, sciences, and professional studies. The "humanities" are thus not conceived as a specific group of academic disciplines, but as forms of study that explore human reality and experience, guided by literature, by history, and by philosophical analysis and reflection.
Applications are especially invited from scholars of established reputation, although less-established scholars are eligible if they hold a doctorate or equivalent qualification at least two years prior to the Fellowship's tenure. Awards are primarily intended for scholars on sabbatical or release-time leaves to provide opportunity for a research visit to the Institute. Preference will be given to candidates whose work could be well supported at the University of Calgary and it is of value to more than one academic area.
Assistance offered beyond Honorary Fellow status is modest, consisting of secretarial support and an office in an active research environment.
The fellowship is tenable at the University of Calgary for four months to one year; the Fellowship is not renewable.
Despite its comparatively recent history, the MacKimmie Library - with branches in geology and geophysics, medicine, law, and management - is one of Canada's largest university libraries.
Visiting Fellows will be expected to conduct their research at the Institute. They will be expected to share their research in a public lecture and in an in-house seminar, and to involve themselves in the community of scholars working at the Institute. The Institute's support should be acknowledged in all oral and written publications that result from the research supported.
