The Department of Chemistry offers Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree programs in all modern areas of chemistry. Our program offers thesis-based research only (i.e. no course based programs). You are invited to contact individual faculty members directly regarding possible openings within their research group.
Over the years, the department has received considerable recognition for its achievements in research, as well as in the training of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Members of this department conduct exciting, leading edge research, are well funded by international, national and provincial agencies and publish extensively in the very best journals. Three members of our department hold prestigious Chair positions including two Canada Research Chairs. Our department offers comparable stipends but with lighter teaching requirements for students, enabling them to focus on their research efforts. As a result, greater than 35% of our ~100 graduate students hold major external scholarships.
Students have access to the most up-to-date instrumentation with an emphasis on hands-on training by our staff. Excellent core facilities include several NMR spectrometers, EPR spectrometer, high resolution and electrospray mass spectrometers, in-house elemental analyses, CCD single crystal X-ray diffractometer, powder X-ray diffractometer (shared with geology), infrared and UV/visible spectrophotometers and other characterization instruments. Students typically perform their own NMR, EPR, GC-MS, IR, UV-Vis and some perform X-ray crystallography. The department also houses outstanding glass and electronics shops.
