Chemistry Contests with Chemistry Department Involvement

Canadian Chemistry Contest

The Canadian Chemistry Contest (CCC) is carried out in conjunction with the Canadian Chemistry Olympiad (CCO). The Canadian Chemistry Contest is for high school and Cégep students.

This competition aims to identify the top students in each of six regions of Canada:
Atlantic, Québec, Ontario, Manitoba/Saskatchewan/Nunavut, Alberta/NWT and British Columbia/Yukon.
The National Winner will receive $800, and Regional Winners in the other five regions will receive $450 each. Regional second and third prizes are $200 and $100 respectively.  In addition, Special Merit Award certificates and CIC lapel pins are awarded for outstanding papers in each district.

2015 Winners from the Alberta/Northwest Territories Division were:

  • Harjee Johal - Crescent Heights High School, Calgary AB
  • Jack Tan - Old Scona Academic High School, Edmonton AB
  • Zachariah Goldthorpe - Old Scona Academic High School, Edmonton AB

Canadian Chemistry Olympiad

The Canadian Chemistry Olympiad (CCO) is an annual event that aims to promote interest in chemistry amongst high school students. Participation in the Canadian National Olympiad Finals or an International Olympiad is a tremendous experience and a unique opportunity to travel and meet fellow students from around the world who have similar interests.

The 2014 international competition was held in Hanoi, Vietnam (46th IChO) with high school students gathering from 77 countries. Our Canadian competitors represented well, walking away with two silver and two bronze medals! The 47th IChO will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2015.
