Curricular (credit course-based) service-learning occurs in a wide variety of courses across campus.  The Centre for Community-Engaged Learning provides resources for students and instructors planning or engaging in service-learning in courses.

Service-learning is effectively integrated into academic courses through

  • collaborative and equitable partnerships between instructors, students, and community organizations
  • critical reflection activities and/or assignments that enable students to combine or contrast academic and community-based forms of knowledge and practice.

With the guidance of the instructor and community partner, students may serve a non-profit community organization or a campus unit in a variety of ways.  Students may do one or a combination of the following:

  • do a team or individual project
  • conduct a small research study
  • produce a product for and with their community partner
  • spend a short period of time serving in a placement at a site beyond the classroom.

Curricular service-learning is often limited to small, short-term activities because it is built into a single course within the academic calendar. However, it can still have a tremendous impact on student learning and community development.

Students often wonder what other, non-traditional types of experiences they can have in their university career. That is where service-learning comes in.

Instructors who are looking to change up their teaching styles are often not sure of where to begin.
