Welcome To Our Program

University of Calgary's Medical Research BuildingWelcome To Our Program

Today, many people are investigating the possibility of donating their bodies to the University of Calgary for purposes of medical education. Such donations provide students and other health care professionals with a unique opportunity to familiarize themselves with the anatomical relationships found in the human body that are essential for understanding the progression and treatment of disease.

Students preparing themselves for careers in medicine and related professions are fully aware of the special privilege granted to them by means of the University of Calgary's Body Donation Program (formerly known as the Body Bequeathal Program) and the obligation that they have to conduct themselves in a professional manner during their educational training. The education of students largely depends on the public spirit of those people who donate their bodies to be studied after their deaths.

On behalf of the University of Calgary, the Cumming School of Medicine, the medical trainees, and the patients who will ultimately be treated by these new doctors, we would like to express deep appreciation of the public spirit of those who donate their bodies for medical study.

If you are interested in more information about donating one's body to the University of Calgary's Body Donation Program, please refer to our Program Details on this website.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS

It is important to understand, that while signing up with either of these organ / tissue programs, namely the Southern Alberta Organ & Tissue Donation Program and the Alberta Government’s website entitled, MyHealth.Alberta.Ca will NOT lead to notification to the Cumming School of Medicine’s Body Donation Program or for remains being entered into our Body Donation Program or any other such program.

The focus of the Southern Alberta Organ & Tissue Donation Program and that of MyHealth.Alberta.Ca is to raise awareness for the need to increase supplies of donated organs and tissues for future transplantation into living patients.  The Cumming School of Medicine’s Body Donation Program is for whole body donations with the main purpose being teaching normal human anatomy as part of the undergraduate medical program.
