Alumni bursaries fuel broader student experiences

Already the recipient of a $1,000 Jason Lang Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement, second-year Kinesiology student David Woods was taken by surprise when he learned late in the Fall term that he was also awarded the Alumni Association’s Judge Kathleen Helmer 1988 Distinguished Alumni Bursary. “I was pretty shocked,” he recalls. “Receiving the Alumni Association bursary that recognizes the hard work I have put in so far is pretty special.”

The alumni-funded bursary brings added financial relief to Woods, meaning that he doesn’t have to look for a part-time job during the term. Instead, he can complement his academic studies by continuing in his role as a volunteer youth group leader at a Calgary junior high school where he organizes summer and winter camps, and sporting activities.

“This is exactly what I hope these bursaries can achieve,” says Ken McKinnon, BComm’80, president of the Alumni Association. “This support helps to ease the financial burden on our scholarship recipients, so that they have time to be engaged students. Ideally I'd like to see them have the time to become involved as student leaders and as volunteers on campus and in our community.”

“Students like David who take advantage of these opportunities beyond the classroom will be rewarded with a fuller and rewarding university experience,” adds McKinnon.

Thanks to the support of thousands of alumni and friends of the University of Calgary, the U of C Alumni Association has given more than $1.2 million in awards to over 800 students since 1975. The Alumni Association held its annual Alumni Scholarship Celebration on January 21, where McKinnon honoured Woods and 45 other recipients of 2008-09 scholarships and bursaries.
