Community Engagement

In order to carry out its mandate to be a bridge between the university and the community and as a meeting place for community interaction and expression, the AGF has forged a series of key partnerships.

AGF - Glenbow Museum Dialogue Series

In December 2007, the AGF and the Glenbow Museum signed a three-year agreement to hold 4 dialogue events each year on topics of vital interest to the community. Dialogue events are sometimes inspired by and held in conjunction with Glenbow exhibitions. Hot topic events offer community members opportunities to listen to and interact with leading thinkers and experts in a neutral and non-threatening environment. The goal is to make the series into a leading event for the entire Calgary community.

Topics have included:

  • The Canadian Mission in Afghanistan
  • The Future of Calgary
  • Genocide: Will it ever be never again?
  • What you don’t know about healthy living may kill you!
  • Facebook, YouTube and Blogs: Do they Matter?

Dialogue events scheduled for 2008-09 will deal with among other topics:
  •  In the Eye of the Dragon: Will China Drive Alberta’s Economy?
  • Is Beauty an Ugly Obsession?
  • Where is Calgary’s Culture?
  • Is Alberta Green Enough?

Chamber of Commerce Luncheon Series

In March 2008 the AGF together with the Sheldon Chumir Foundation sponsored its first luncheon speaker: Carol Off from CBC’s As It Happens. These lunches are designed to be small gatherings in which prominent leaders, thinkers and researchers share ideas and findings with the leading members of the community.
