As a professional school of education, at a research-intensive research university, our faculty is committed to assisting our students to develop deep understanding of teaching and learning, to develop practical skills, and to become more confident in their abilities as teachers.
Our purpose is to engage prospective teachers deeply and actively in disciplines and to produce teachers with beautiful, robust, rigorous minds and dispositions such as imagination, courage, communicative competencies, perseverance, openness for complexity and diversity, attunement to learners, and always to keep alive the desire to learn. We are committed to educating teachers who will be strongly oriented to respect, understanding and openness to diversity and social justice, and responsive to complexity and change in ongoing ways.
The Faculty of Education offers degree programs which provide professional preparation for teachers, as well as opportunities for those interested in upgrading their skills. We offer direct entry five year programs of studies leading to a combined BEd degree completed concurrently with either a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Kinesiology degree that are in conjunction with select programs from the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science or Faculty of Kinesiology. In addition, we also offer a two year after degree option for those that have previously completed an undergraduate degree. Upon completion of one of our programs, all program graduates will be prepared for provincially recognized schools serving students from Kindergarten through to Grade 12.
Because there are more applicants to the Faculty of Education than there are places, enrolment limits are in effect. The number of new students admitted to any specialization will vary depending on the number of placements available. Please contact the Admissions Office or Faculty of Education for more information on admission and program requirements.
Students should also be aware that a criminal record check is required prior to commencement of the field experience.
Applicants who must satisfy the English Language Proficiency requirement should refer to the English Language Proficiency requirements page.
High school students can apply directly to a five year concurrent program, completing both a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Kinesiology and a Bachelor of Education.
Transfer students with 36 credits or less (6 full course equivalents or less) are also eligible to apply to the concurrent program. Students who have completed more than 36 credits (6 full courses) must complete a first degree and then apply to the 2 year Bachelor of Education After Degree program.
Students must meet admission requirements for the faculty offering the teaching major as well as the competitive admission requirements for the Faculty of Education.
Students must select to complete the Elementary (Kindergarten to Grade 6) or the Secondary (Grades 7 to 12) route.
