Faculty Admission Criteria - Direct Entry Programs

The deadline to apply for Arts (Dance), Engineering,  Medicine (BHSc), and Science (Neuroscience) is April 1. The deadline to apply for all other programs is May 1.

The University of Calgary will obtain high school transcripts on the applicant's behalf.

Pure Mathematics 30 or Mathematics 30-1 is required as a prerequisite for courses in the following programs: Archaeology, Economics, Geography and Psychology.

Biology 30 and Chemistry 30 are required as prerequisites for Biology 231 in the BSc in Psychology, the BSc in Primatology Honours, and the BA or BSc in Archaeology with a concentration in Physical Anthropology.

Applicants are recommended to present Physics 30, however, it will not be counted in the calculation of the senior matriculation average. Those applicants who do not present Physics 30 will be required to complete Physics 211 in the first year of the program.

Offers of admission are conditional upon applicants maintaining a minimum final high school matriculation (or equivalent), of 83.0% calculated on the listed 30-level course requirements.

If the fifth subject is from Group C or D, the student must present a minimum average of 65.0% on the first four subjects and the required high school average on the five subjects.

Applicants to the Schulich School of Engineering without Mathematics 31, but who present an alternate Group A or B subject may be considered, on an individual basis, for admission. However, such applicants will be required to present a higher average and if admitted, will be required to take an alternative calculus stream to overcome this deficiency. Note: This excludes students who have previously taken Mathematics 31.

If the fifth subject is from Group C or D, the student must present a minimum average of 65.0% on the first four subjects and the required high school average on the five subjects.

The following 30-level science subjects are required or recommended as Group A and B subjects:

  • Chemistry 30 (required for all Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geology & Geophysics, and Physics & Astronomy Programs).
  • Biology 30 (required for all Biological Sciences programs).
  • Pure Mathematics 30 or Pure Mathematics 30-1 is required for all programs. A minimum grade of 70.0% is the prerequisite for Mathematics 211, 221, 249 and 251.
  • Mathematics 31 (strongly recommended for all programs).
  • Physics 30 (recommended for all Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geology & Geophysics, and Physics & Astronomy programs as well as for the Applied Mathematics major).


Alberta / Northwest Territories / Nunavut Grade 12 Subject Classifications

English 30 or English Language Arts (ELA) 30-1 is required for admission to all programs. For admission purposes, University of Calgary classifies all Grade 12 subjects (except English 30) into four groups:

Group A:
Social Studies 30-1, 30-level language other than English

Group B:
Applied Mathematics 30, Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Pure Mathematics 30, Mathematics 30-1, Mathematics 30-2, Mathematics 31, Physics 30, Science 30, and Computing Science ADV (Informatique AVAN) 5 credits 6

Group C:
Art 30, Art 31, Dance 35, Drama 30, Music 30 and Music 31

Group D:
Other 5-credit (or two 3-credit) Grade 12 subjects such as: Physical Education 30, Work Experience 35, Religious Studies 35, etc. (excluding Special Projects 30), or five credits of Advanced series Career and Technology (CTS) courses such as: Information Processing Advanced, Legal Studies Advanced, etc.

Social Studies 30-2 is acceptable as a Group D subject provided that Social Studies 30-1 is not presented.

NOTES
If there is a discrepancy between the admission requirements and program offerings listed here and those listed in the 2011/2012 Calendar, the Calendar will be deemed correct.

  1. Two subjects in the same field may not be presented to satisfy entrance requirements unless these subjects are: (a) Pure Mathematics 30 or Mathematics 30-1 and Mathematics 31, (b) Applied Mathematics 30 or Mathematics 30-2 and Mathematics 31, or (c) languages other than English (excluding French - see note 4) with the permission of the Director of Undergraduate Admissions, (d) Art 30 and 31 (Fine Arts only), (e) Music 30 and 31 (Fine Arts only).
  2. One of Applied Mathematics 30, Pure Mathematics 30, Mathematics 30-1 and Mathematics 30-2 can be presented for admissions.
  3. Only one of French 30, 31A, 31B, 31C; Français 30, 30-2; French Language Arts 30, 30-2 may be used to satisfy admission requirements.
  4. Science 30 cannot be substituted for specific Grade 12 science courses required for admission (Chemistry 30, Biology 30, Physics 30).
